- The Working Group of German Minorities (AGDM) congratulates Johannis with his historical success
The news that, despite polls suggesting otherwise, Klaus Johannis, a member of the German minority in Romania, was elected head of state in Romania makes us proud. On behalf of our member organisations I would like to wish the new president much strength and success. It is also a sign for us, German minorities nearby and far away, that after several decades of persecution and discrimination a new time has arrived in a Central or Eastern European country and that a skilled politician coming from the German minority can work for his home country in the highest office. From the common perspective of the traditional national minorities in Europe it is very important to see that the positive attitude towards national minorities of the newly elected president will have its effect in the difficult day-to-day politics both inside his country and abroad, and throughout Europe. This is what we wish President Johannis with all our heart and we offer our close cooperation and our professional expertise.
